The paper looks back at medical libraries' reference service development history heading to knowledge and smart reference mode from the traditional, digital and collaborative one and brings to a conclusion that the reference service of medical libraries is shaped into the trend of becoming precise, active, widespread, diverse, smart and full of knowledge with the development of information technologies, like big data, cloud computing and Artificial Intelligence(AI),etc.
