The paper gives an overview of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) and introduces the background of the library's strategic planning. It conducts a systematic analysis of the strategic planning on the 2017-2027 development, and puts forward some inspiration for the future building of our libraries of medicine in China, namely, setting clearly-defined development goals and creating scientific development plans; conducting open science-oriented building and realizing data-driven healthcare; focusing on the cultivation of librarians and laying a foundation for future development; expanding exchanges and cooperation to create a win-win situation for all the parties involved.
